Spanish public broadcaster RTVE is to show the upcoming FIFA World Cup from Qatar in 4K on its digital terrestrial TV service. The news emerged from the 4K-HDR Summit in Malaga, Spain.
RTVE will be offering nearly 20 matches in 4K, including all the games played by the Spanish National Team.
Víctor Sánchez, director of Media and Operations at TVE, and Ángel García Castillejo, director of Audiovisual Policies, Public Service/International at RTVE, made the announcement.
The DTT transmissions will be available to Spanish football fans on its channels La 1, Teledeporte, RTVE Play, RNE and RTVE.es. The signals will be available to about 60 per cent of Spanish homes.
The transmissions will also tap into FIFA’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) colour production quality to users with suitable TV sets. The signals will all be free-to-air and this is the first FIFA series available free-to-air since 1998. This is the first DTT broadcast worldwide in 4K of an event of this complexity and duration.
