A report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) says that MiniLED panel production grew last year and that rapid growth is expected in 2023 and 2024.
MiniLED backlights in LCDs can offer numerous advantages over other flat panel display technologies, most notably in higher brightness, high contrast ratio, lower power consumption than WOLED TV and higher efficiency. The superior performance makes MiniLED backlights attractive for use in a variety of applications, ranging from large TVs to tablets. Automotive and industrial applications are also advantageously addressed by MiniLED backlight technologies due to their higher brightness and higher contrast ratio.
The report admits that while the display industry is suffering through one of its worst downturns in its history and expects the tough situation to last the next two or three quarters, Mini LEDs are still a bright spot. Q4 2022 MiniLED backlight shipments reached 5.6 million units with 1 per cent year-on-year growth.
Apple still dominates MiniLED IT panel shipments; MiniLED iPad panel shipments amounted to 1.6 million units in Q4 2022 with the MacBook Pro at 2.2 million panels.
Korea, Japan and main TV brands in China released new MiniLED TVs at CES. Key TV brands remain aggressive in promoting MiniLED TVs. This will drive TV to become the largest application for MiniLED shipments after 2026, believes DSCC.
DSCC Director of Taiwan Operations, Leo Liu, commented: “Shipments of MiniLED products will keep growing steadily in display backlights. Apart from backlights, we expect to see more and more applications to adopt MiniLED technology. The development of MiniLED is really beyond imagination.”
