Extreme E celebrates commitment to recycling on Global Recycling Day
March 18, 2022
On Global Recycling Day, Extreme E is proud to celebrate its efforts in this area and taking positive action to protect our planet’s future.
As outlined in the Championship’s Season 1 Sustainability Report, Extreme E was Carbon Neutral by the end of its inaugural campaign. The sport for purpose series uses its entertainment platform to showcase the most sustainable way to run motorsport events, promote the adoption of electric vehicles and work with partners on innovative ways to drive down carbon emissions. Recycling is one of many actions Extreme E has undertaken to address the environmental impacts of climate change, ranging from small to large scale initiatives. At Extreme E events, a combination of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and upcycled second-life Zenobe batteries provide the energy essential to run a major motorsport event in some of the world’s most extreme conditions. Moreover, the series uses the water generated as a by-product from the on-site hydrogen fuel generator to clean the cars. On track, the new Continental CrossContact Extreme E tyre for Season 2 is made from around one-third recycled and renewable raw materials. Silica obtained from the ashes of rice husks, a waste product from agriculture, is one example of materials used. Extreme E’s legacy programmes also promote renewable energy that grows economies while reducing carbon emissions and deliver long-lasting, sustainable solutions with maximum impact. Joining forces with Count Us In, a group of global companies united in taking action on climate change, the Extreme E Count Us In Challenge was launched. The challenge calls on Extreme E fans to take steps to reduce their carbon footprint and urges governments, cities and businesses to do more to address climate change. Some of these steps include cutting food waste, not buying bottled water and using less plastic.
