Extreme E wins Motorsport UK Environmental Award
January 23, 2022
Extreme E celebrated once again as the ground-breaking series collected the 2022 Environmental Award at Motorsport UK’s Night of Champions.
The sport for purpose championship was announced as the recipient at the annual celebration of motorsport where British champions are celebrated for their achievements. The 2022 Environmental Award recognises Extreme E’s exceptional contribution towards environmental responsibility and extensive efforts to promote sustainability during its inaugural season in 2021. The award was presented by Motorsport UK Chair David Richards CBE to Genesys Andretti United Extreme E competitor Catie Munnings and Head of Communications for Extreme E, Julia Fry. The Motorsport UK Environmental Award was created to recognise a truly exceptional and outstanding achievement or contribution towards environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motorsport activities, events and communications. Previous recipients have included Williams Hybrid Power, Rally for Wales and Lord Drayson. David Richards CBE, Chair of Motorsport UK, said: “Motorsport is a microcosm of society and faces the same existential issue shared by all industries and individuals around how we can tackle climate change. “The Motorsport UK Board chose Extreme E as the recipient of its Environmental Award because it has demonstrated that climate change can be tackled on several fronts. This novel off-road racing series uses the powerful platform of motorsport to highlight the damage that we have created to our environment all around the world and how we can address these issues.” Alejandro Agag, CEO and Founder of Extreme E, said: “We’re only just starting out on this incredible journey, but already we have achieved so much and all of us at Extreme E are proud to be recognised so early and at such a high level in the industry. “We have an amazing opportunity, not only to continue to push the boundaries of what is possible for Extreme E, but to further our role of inspiring others within the motorsport industry to join us in making changes, small or large, as we all look to the future. The race against climate change is one that we can win and must win.” Genesys Andretti United Extreme E driver Catie Munnings added: “It was an honour to attend tonight’s Motorsport UK’s Night of Champions and pick up the Environmental Award on behalf of Extreme E. The championship did a fantastic job in its inaugural season to help highlight numerous climate issues across the globe and it was a great privilege to be involved in the legacy programmes alongside Timmy [Hansen] and my team, Genesys Andretti United Extreme E. Each one of us can make a difference, but together we can make change.” This award follows an impressive line-up of accolades from Extreme E’s first season, which have included: the Technical Innovation (Sport) Award and Creative Use of AR/VR at the Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards; the Sustainability Award at the Leaders Sports Awards; Sports Production of the Year at the Broadcast Sport Awards; as well as the Silver Award for Sports Innovation, and the Bronze Award for Sustainability in Sport at the Sports Business Awards. Building on the success of its debut year in 2021, Extreme E Season 2 ‘The Race for the Planet’ promises to captivate on and off track on a whole new level, whilst delivering on its overall purpose to tackle climate change through sport, starting with the Desert X Prix in Neom, Saudi Arabia, 19-20 February.
