MPs to vote on Media Select Committee Chair
April 25, 2023
By Colin Mann
Nominations are now open for the position of Chair of the UK House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee following the resignation of Julian Knight.
Nominations close at noon on May 16th. If there is more than one candidate, a ballot of the whole House will take place on May 17th between 11am and 2.30pm.
Under the standing orders of the House, the chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is allocated to the Conservative Party, with the committee set to change its name on April 26th to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee following recent changes to the machinery of government.
Candidates require the support of 15 fellow Conservative Members for their nomination to be valid. Should there be a ballot, MPs will vote by ranking candidates in order of preference and votes will be counted under the Alternative Vote system. The result will be announced in the chamber later in the day.
Valid nominations received on sitting days will be printed in the next day’s House business papers. They will also be published on the Parliament website along with the candidate’s supporting statement, signatories and any declared interests.
The CMS Committee will continue to scrutinise policy matters relating to culture, arts, media, sport, tourism and civil society, with the newly-named Science, Innovation and Technology (previously Science and Technology) Committee scrutinising digital policy areas.
