Mediaset to launch movie on demand service

Italian commercial broadcaster Mediaset is to launch a subscription-based VoD service before the end of the year, offering a catalogue of 5,000 movies and TV shows, which will also include titles soon after their cinema release.
The new project was revealed by the deputy chairman of the Mediaset group, Pier Silvio Berlusconi, during the presentation of the autumn schedules.
Users will still have to sign a contract, but there will be no constraints of traditional pay-TV subscriptions. The new service will be branded ‘Infinity’ and allow the viewing of movies through PCs, tablets and game consoles.
Mediaset will also will retain the Premium Play service which will be exclusive to subscribers of its pay-TV platform, Mediaset Premium.
During his presentation, Berlusconi highlighted that, over a short period of time, the number of TV channels in Italy that can be received nationwide has grown from 7 to over 300, thus making Italy a very competitive TV market in Europe.
