Damian Green, currently Acting Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the UK House of Commons has announced his candidacy for the full-time role. Green has been a member of the Committee since the start of the current Parliament in January 2020. The Conservative MP for Ashford has previously served as First Secretary of State and Work and Pensions Secretary.
Green joins fellow Conservative MPs Damian Collins – a former Chair of the predecessor Digital, Culture Media and Sport Committee – and Dame Caroline Dinenage in seeking to take over from Julian Knight.
Nominations close at noon on May 16th. A ballot of the whole House will take place on May 17th between 11am and 2.30pm. Under the standing orders of the House, the chair of the Committee is allocated to the Conservative Party.
Candidates require the support of 15 fellow Conservative Members for their nomination to be valid. MPs will vote by ranking candidates in order of preference and votes will be counted under the Alternative Vote system. The result will be announced in the chamber later in the day.
The CMS Committee will continue to scrutinise policy matters relating to culture, arts, media, sport, tourism and civil society, with the newly-named Science, Innovation and Technology (previously Science and Technology) Committee scrutinising digital policy areas.
